Preschool is available for children 3 years of age by August 1st.

Children must be potty trained without pull-ups and able to care for their own bathroom needs.

The preschool program is designed to introduce the children to a structured setting where they will be able to learn at their own pace.
Children in preschool are greeted by Mrs. Amy Helmkamp, our Preschool Teacher, and Mrs. Carie Andrews, our Preschool Aide.

Amy Helmkamp

Amy Helmkamp

Mrs. Amy Helmkamp has been in early childhood education for 4 years and is a graduate of Iowa State University with a Bachelor of Fine Art degree.  She enjoys watching the preschoolers open up to build friendships with their classmates and learn about Jesus.

Carie Andrews

Mrs. Carie Andrews began substitute teaching for various grades at Our Shepherd during the 2016-2017 school year.  She is thrilled to become the full-time preschool aide.  Carie has been blessed to be able to stay home and raise her 2 sons until both were in full-day school.  Carie and her family have been attending Our Shepherd Lutheran Church since 2008.

Each day class starts with the Pledge of Allegiance and prayer.  Children are taught daily through words, music and actions that God loves them.  Faith is expressed daily and incorporated into all aspects of teaching.

Children will work on age appropriate skill development through the following:

  • Differentiated instruction
  • Language arts thematic literature readiness activities
  • Gross and fine motor activities
  • Creative activities in art and music
  • Structured and unstructured play
  • Hands-on activities
  • Guest speakers and field trips
  • One-on-one student/teacher instruction

As you will see below, this allows for more small group and individual teaching opportunities.

The Classroom Schedule:

Start of Day

Students begin by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, joining in prayer, and receiving their classroom job assignment for the day.

Circle Time

During circle time students learn about the weather, calendar, letter of the week, and have story time.  This is an interactive group setting.

*Chapel Wednesday Mornings at 8:45

Preschoolers are assigned Chapel Buddies to help guide them in their faith journey.

Small Group and One-on-One Time

Students will work on phonics, coordination, problem solving, following step-by-step direction, etc.

Free Choice

Preschoolers are given the opportunity to make individual decisions on where in the classroom they'd like to spend this free time.  This allows for good decision making and age appropriate social skill development.

Gym and Recess

As students are having fun they are refining their gross motor skills, learning new games, and following instructions while being physically active.

Worship Time

This is a time to learn bible stories and share God's Word.

Small Group and Table Time

The day ends with another opportunity for students to learn in a small group setting and work on refining their writing skills.

*Library on Fridays

Preschoolers will visit the library, share stories, and check-out books.
