Hello, and welcome to Preschool at Our Shepherd!
2018-2019 School Year
New this year, Our Shepherd is excited to announce multiple preschool program options! We now have HALF-DAY and FULL-DAY programs!
Our FULL-DAY program will allow your child to participate in the morning preschool class and join the pre-kindergarten class in the afternoon. The afternoon will be filled with activities that promote the development of the child spiritually, cognitively, socially, and emotionally.
Half-day programs 8:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
Monday - Friday (5 days)
Full-day programs 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Monday - Friday (5 days)
Preschool is available for children 3 years of age by August 1st.
Children must be potty trained without pull-ups and able to care for their own bathroom needs.
The preschool program is designed to introduce the children to a structured setting where they will be able to learn at their own pace.
Children in preschool are greeted by Mrs. Amy Helmkamp, our Preschool Teacher, and Mrs. Carie Andrews, our Preschool Aide.
Mrs. Amy Helmkamp has been in early childhood education for 4 years and is a graduate of Iowa State University with a Bachelor of Fine Art degree. She enjoys watching the preschoolers open up to build friendships with their classmates and learn about Jesus.
Mrs. Carie Andrews began substitute teaching for various grades at Our Shepherd during the 2016-2017 school year. She is thrilled to become the full-time preschool aide. Carie has been blessed to be able to stay home and raise her 2 sons until both were in full-day school. Carie and her family have been attending Our Shepherd Lutheran Church since 2008.

Visit the Mrs. Helmkamp's Early Childhood blog to get daily updates on what our students are learning! Our Shepherd believes that communication between teachers, students, and parents is key.
Each day class starts with the Pledge of Allegiance and prayer. Children are taught daily through words, music and actions that God loves them. Faith is expressed daily and incorporated into all aspects of teaching.
Children will work on age appropriate skill development through the following:
- Differentiated instruction
Language arts thematic literature readiness activities
- Gross and fine motor activities
- Creative activities in art and music
- Structured and unstructured play
- Hands-on activities
- Guest speakers and field trips
- One-on-one student/teacher instruction
As you will see below, this allows for more small group and individual teaching opportunities.
