2018 CONGREGATIONAL SUMMIT SUMMARY
CONGREGATIONAL SUMMIT 2018 SUMMARY
The goal of the third annual Congregational Summit is to move Our Shepherd past talking about possibilities for our future to building consensus around a path we want to pursue. We are moving towards a capital campaign to fund important ministry investments and we want good constructive dialogue to lead into making big decisions that will shape our ministry for the next ten years.
“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ… And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” Col. 3:23-24, Phil 1:6
God has enriched us in every way through Christ Jesus our Lord. In Him, we have forgiveness of sins, the hope of everlasting life and love to receive and share as brothers and sisters. True to Him and His call, we will devote ourselves to prayer, prayerful study and conversation at the summit. Our time together will revolve around four topics:
Our Church is the people God has gathered in worship and blessed with the Word and Sacrament in this place. We will show how God does His work here. We will renew our resolve to be a place where people can COME WORSHIP to receive Christ as He promises to come to His people. We will explore how we can make an even deeper impact in our area through worship and as a Church family.
Our Community is increasingly diverse. This diversity of people and multiple ways people communicate is changing how we reach out with the gospel. We will learn about “them” and how we can connect with “them.”
Our Challenge isn’t many “challenges,” but a single challenge experienced in many different ways. We are called to share the life we have in Christ, but feel very real limitations posed by facility, finance and other ministry-related costs. We will explore and discuss a Christian perspective of balancing very real costs with the responsibilities of our call to share life with Our Shepherd.
Our Commitment is where the “rubber meets the road.” Talk is meaningless, or even destructive without action. While it’s not realistic to expect unanimity regarding every decision, we always strive for consensus. The goal of our summit will be to emerge with a firm decision on proceeding with a capital campaign to fund some combination of significant ministry investments.
Possible ministry investments include drive/parking improvements, expansion of the gym, permanent raised contemporary worship platform in the gym, greatly expanded early childhood care addition to the school, traditional worship multi-site campus, and/or seed money for new ministries. Each of these investments would greatly enhance our ministry by making it easier for people to connect with Christ at Our Shepherd. You can learn more about these projects in our article “Potential Capital Campaign Projects” available on the website or in the narthex Communication Center.
God already knows the path He’s marked out for us. We’re trusting in His Spirit to show us the way as we strive to walk in the Way of Christ. We also pray that He will use us to provide the resources necessary for His work among us.
